WHAT IS THE GULLAH GEECHEE CULTURAL HERITAGE CORRIDOR?   The Corridor is a federal  National Heritage Area.  A  National Heritage Area is a site that represents a significant story of local, regional, national, and even global importance.  The designation of the Corridor as a federal National Heritage Area recognizes the Gullah Geechee people for maintaining their cultural traditions and for being an outstanding reflection of American values of ingenuity, pride, and perseverance. The intent of the designation is to help us to preserve and interpret the traditional cultural practices, sites, and resources associated with Gullah Geechee people.

WHAT DO WE DO AT THE COMMISSION?  Both the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and the federal Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission established to oversee it, were designated by an act of Congress on October 12, 2006 through the National Heritage Areas Act of 2006.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission is charged with helping to achieve the goals of the Corridor  designation which are to recognize, sustain, and celebrate the important contributions made to American culture and history by the Gullah Geechee; to assist state and local governments and public and private entities in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida in interpreting the story of the Gullah Geechee and preserving Gullah Geechee folklore, arts, crafts, and music; and to assist in identifying and preserving sites, historical data, artifacts, and objects associated with Gullah Geechee people and culture for the benefit and education of the public.

Our programmatic work involves cultural documentation and preservation project such as our Watch Night and Emancipation Proclamation Linked Observance initiative. On an on-going basis, we also provide interpretive assistance to a range of organizations from National Parks to museums.  We directly encourage and facilitate on-going research and creative production through our Gullah Geechee Researchers Consortium and our Gullah Geechee Creators Collaborative.

We regularly deliver a wide-range of community-based, Gullah Geechee cultural programs as well as educational events on issues of concern such as the challenge of managing heirs property.  The Commission also holds quarterly, public meetings to allow a wide range of stakeholders to bring issues and projects concerning the Gullah Geechee people and the Corridor directly to its attention.  You can find informaton about our public programs on our EVENTS page.  If you have questions about our work or would like to request the assistance of the Commission, please contact our Executive Director Heather Hodges at 843.818.4587.
